On Excellence

What is Excellence? For some people excellence may be competing in the High School State tournament. For others it may be participating in the Olympics, and yet for others excellence is not achieved until they win the gold medal. However I do not believe in excellence, it is something that can not be completely achieved. People may complete the greatest accomplishments in the world, but others are always striving to do better.
I believe someone could achieve excellence if they did not make any mistakes. On the other hand it is in human nature to make mistakes. No one in this world can go a whole life time without making some sort of mistake. People may strive to do their best, but most of the time it is never good enough because others will set higher records and achieve more goals. I do not think one person can be the best by themselves, but by working together they can reach some of the greatest deeds.
People may have great values, be 100 percent committed to what they do and try to be the best they can be, but they still may never achieve excellence. Their hard work and important values may be the key reason to why they are successful in what they do. I believe in order to excel in what you do; you must have good values to help you along the way. People’s values will differ from one another, but each one is important in its own way. Just as it is explained in The Crooked Tree by Benjamin Hoff, a tree can be used for lumber or for shade, depending on who needs it.
Excellence is hard to come by, but great things are achieved by working towards it. The values that come out of every situation help others to compete harder to be the best. Maybe someday we will have the exact knowledge of what excellence is, or maybe we will just keep striving to get better.
